Safety is paramount while enjoying all the Schuylkill has to offer! Here are guidelines and tips to follow to make sure you remain safe while on the River, with guidance and expertise from both the Pennsylvania Fish + Boat Commission and the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia.

First Thing First: Know Your Skills

1. Review the PA Fish + Boat Commission’s Paddling Tips
2. Peruse the “Rules of the River” from the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia

What to Bring

1. Whistle or other noisemaking device
2. Personal flotation device
3. Affixed lights, if launching or returning between sunset and sunrise

In Case of Emergency Call 911…

1. Use the words “MARINE” and “SCHUYLKILL” in your 911 call if you are ON the water.

Prevent Accidents

1. Avoid collisions: Know your surroundings and alert others to your presence.
2. Do not stop under nor turn within 100 m of any bridge
3. Use your voice (ie, give a shout of “Look ahead” or wave your arms) if a safety incident is about to occur.

Plan and Prepare

1. River conditions and flow of the water are highly variable and should be checked each day before launching. See today’s River Forecast here.
2. Check the weather for any potential upcoming rain or conditions not conducive to water safety.
